oan Gruffudd má na kontě několik rolí ve velkorozpočtových televizních dramatech, z nichž patří k těm nejvýznamnějším série historických snímků Hornblower. Gruffudd debutoval v roce 1994 seriálem Pobol y Cwm. Následovala titulní role v seriálu Poldark, po níž se představil ve filmu Oscar Wilde a hollywoodském trháku Titanic. Mezi jeho další celovečerní filmy patří Šelomon a Gaenor, Shooters, 102 dalmatinů, Zjevení a Život jedné dívky. Zahrál si mj. také v televizním filmu Great Expectations a seriálu Sága rodu Forsythů.
